May 6th, 2006
In the Interior Design and Architecture industry, the act
of creating fine art can be a rarity given professionals'
everyday, hectic schedules; creativity is constrained by the
program requirements and budgets of assigned projects. Blank
Canvas set out to create an event that would give members
of this industry an opportunity to get back to their creative
roots and, simply put, to throw it down!
The Art with Heart event at Space took place on May 6th, 2006.
The day began at 11:00am with eight teams from each of the
top interior design & architecture firms around the city of
Seattle. They came together at Space, an art gallery in the
heart of downtown, each team with the same goal: work together
to create progressive works of art in a single day. Each team
was given one 4' x 4' blank canvas, and the only guideline
to be followed was that each team member, taking turns throughout
the day, would get "throwdown" sessions alone on the canvas
in 15-minute intervals. The palette, media and materials used
were left entirely up to the participants… and the finished
pieces were nothing short of amazing!
Participants were encouraged to invite friends and family
to come and watch the action throughout the day. The more
people got involved, the more creative energy flowed. With
the intention to expand the context of the event to make an
impact on a community in need, post-Throwdown cocktail party
and charity auction were held later that evening. Each canvas
was sold, with all of the proceeds donated to Art with Heart;
a Seattle based charity empowering youth to deal with crisis
through art. In addition to the paintings created that day,
there were 9 custom area rugs donated to the cause from Milliken
Carpet. For more information on this generous donation click
